Chäserstatt - Ärnergale - Grittlesee - Blitzingen
Tour 27
The tour starts and ends directly in Ulrichen. The first few kilometres follow National Cycle Route No. 1 along the Rhone River downstream to Mühlebach. From there, the route branches off towards the Chäserstatt alpine restaurant, following a paved and gravel road that is still relatively easy to ride. Take advantage of the sunny terrace for a break and fully recharge your e-bike battery. Then the real challenge begins: a brutally steep climb ascends the mountain ridge, gaining almost 500 metres of elevation and pushing even powerful e-mountain bikes to their limits. Without an e-bike, this climb is not rideable.
Once on the ridge, the gradient eases. At a fork in the trail, you have a choice: turn right towards Grittlesee or left into the descent towards Ärnergalen. We head to Grittlesee. This tour then takes you into the descent. It begins across open, steep terrain where the trail is barely visible. After crossing a short stone wall, the real singletrack starts: rough but highly rideable, it hugs the mountainside. Once in the forest, it transforms into a true flow trail, featuring S1-level corners on firm forest ground. Be careful not to carry too much speed, as a few tricky sections leave no room for mistakes. Back on the valley floor, National Cycle Route No. 1 follows the Rhone upstream from Blitzingen back to Ulrichen.
Note: During the summer, sheep graze on the mountain ridge, protected by livestock guardian dogs. The entire area is then extensively fenced. The dogs will allow mountain bikers to pass if they dismount and push their bikes. The tour is even more rewarding in autumn.
This tour is not for the faint-hearted. If you find all the other tours in Goms too easy, this is the next challenge to take on.
